Annual profection is a traditional timing technique that advances one Whole Sign house for each completed year of life. The first year begins with the first house; each birthday advances the annual focus to the next house, repeating every twelve years.
Three pieces of the annual framework
- Profected house — the Whole Sign place receiving annual emphasis.
- Profected sign — the zodiacal sign occupying that house in the natal chart.
- Time lord — the traditional domicile ruler of the profected sign.
What the technique actually says
A profection identifies a place and a ruler that deserve priority in the year’s judgment. It does not make every topic of that house inevitable. The natal condition of the time lord and current testimony involving it help determine how the activation is expressed.

Worked example: advance one place per completed year
The fixture begins with Taurus as House 1. At age 36 the twelve-place cycle returns to House 1, activating Taurus and Venus; at age 37 it advances to House 2, Gemini and Mercury.
- Age 36 modulo 12 equals 0: activate House 1, Taurus, ruled by Venus.
- Age 37 modulo 12 equals 1: activate House 2, Gemini, ruled by Mercury.
- The birthday is the exact annual rollover boundary.
- Inspect the time lord in the natal chart before adding current-sky testimony.
Subdivide the annual place into monthly profections
Valens describes subordinate monthly chronocrators by taking one-twelfth of the year or period. Stelliums annual-profections-2.1.0 divides the exact birthday-to-birthday interval into twelve equal UTC durations. Month 1 begins from the annual profected place; each later subdivision advances one Whole Sign place and takes that sign’s traditional domicile ruler as monthly lord.
- Read the nativity before timing.
- Read the annual place and lord before the monthly layer.
- Use the monthly place as a narrower topical window inside the annual frame.
- Inspect the monthly lord in the nativity rather than treating the period label as a verdict.
- Keep returns, current transits, and Zodiacal Releasing as separately calculated testimony.
Worked example: a Taurus annual place
For a Taurus rising nativity in an age-36 House 1 profection, Month 1 remains Taurus with Venus as monthly lord. Month 2 advances to Gemini with Mercury as lord. Month 7 reaches Scorpio and Mars. Month 12 reaches Aries and Mars before the next birthday begins a new annual place.
